Course offerings may vary each semester. Below is a list of current College Now courses scheduled for 2008 - 2009:

BI-170    Plants and People
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ ELA Regents or 480+ Verbal SAT. If neither taken, minimum 85+ in English 5 if not taken, in English 4.
Plant forms and functions including plant evolution, ecology, heredity and diseases; plants in history, folklore, agriculture, horticulture, and industry, plant drugs and poison.

BU-201    Business Organization and Management
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65+ ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70+ high school average.
Structure and character of modern business; business and its relationship to other social organizations; how businesses are organized and managed; human factors in business and industry; management and the decision-making process; planning, organizing, programming, and controlling processes; production, financing, and marketing considerations in operation of business enterprises.

BU-500    Introduction to Microcomputer Applications
2 class hours  2 laboratory hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65+ ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70+ high school average.
Introduction to the use of computers in business, concepts of computer hardware and software, elements of problem solving. Designed to provide “hands-on” experience with the IBM personal computer. Software packages are applied to business applications including spreadsheets, word processing, database and graphics.

CH-151    General Chemistry I

Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ Math Seq. II Regents/Seq. III /Math B in Progress/High School Recommendation/QCC Waiver.
Matter and energy; stoichiometry; gas laws; phase equilibrium; periodicity of elements; atomic and molecular structure; bonding; molecular orbital theory; kinetic theory; states of matter and inter-molecular forces; atomic spectra; properties of solutions, enthalpy; electrolytes; colligative properties; acid-base neutralization.

CH-152    General Chemistry II
3 class hours  1 recitation hour  3 laboratory hours  4.5 credits
Prerequisite: CH-151
Kinetics; thermodynamics; gas phase equilibria; pH; dissociation of weak acids and bases; buffers; ionic equilibria; solubility product; hydrolysis; Nernst equation; electrochemistry; voltaic and electrolytic cells; Faraday’s Law; nuclear chemistry; theory of analytic-group separation and ion identification.

CJ-101    Introduction to Criminal Justice
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ ELA Regents or 480+ Verbal SAT. If neither taken, minimum 85+ in English 5 if not taken, in English 4.
A survey of the institutions and processes of the criminal justice system. Special emphasis on police, courts and corrections.

CS-100    Introduction to Computers and Programming
2 class hours  2 laboratory hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ Math A Regents or 480 + Math SAT
A survey of topics in computer science including history, hardware components, software applications and the use of computers in society. Use of software applications. Introduction of computer programming using a high level language.

EN-101    English Composition I
3 class hours  1 recitation hour  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ ELA Regents or 480+ Verbal SAT. If neither taken, minimum 85+ in English 5 if not taken, in English 4.
Development of a process for producing intelligent essays that are clearly and effectively written: library work; 6,000 words of writing, both formal themes written for evaluation and in informal writing such as the keeping of a journal. During the recitation hour, students review grammar and syntax, sentence structure, paragraph development and organization, and the formulation of thesis statements.

EN-102    English Composition II: Introduction to Literature
3 class hours  1 recitation hour  3 credits
Prerequisite: EN-101
Continued practice in writing combined with an introduction to literature: fiction, drama, and poetry. During the recitation hour, students review basic elements of writing and analytical and critical reading skills and research strategies.

ET-505    Introduction to C++ Object Oriented Programming
3 class hours  3 laboratory hours  4 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65 + ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70 + high school average
Introduction to the C ++ with object oriented programming emphasizes applications and their solutions. Topics include data types and their operators. I/O, control statements, functions, classes and objects. Students will be introduced to Microsoft’s Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and learn how to create, compile, link and debug their own C++ programs. A hands-on approach will be emphasized by using computer workstations. Laboratory hours complement class work.

ET-710    Web Technology I: Building and Maintaining Web Sites
3 class hours  3 laboratory hours  4 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65+ ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70+ high school average.
Students will learn to design, build and administer their own World Wide Web site. The course will cover everything from web server installation to the preparation of multimedia content for delivery on the internet/intranet. Topics include: Using Microsoft Frontpage; web site design and implementation; creating web pages that include text, hypertext, graphics, sound, forms, frames, links and embedded multimedia content; Java Script programming, and using Java Applets.

HE-102    Critical Issues in Health Education
2 class hours  2 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ ELA Regents or 480+ Verbal SAT. If neither taken, minimum 85+ in English 5 if not taken, in English 4.
A concentrated course of study involving research and discussion of critical health issues dealing with mental health, addictions and dependencies, exercise, diet, human sexuality, major diseases and their relation to morbidity and longevity. Students are also required to attend Health Lecture Series programs and/or related field experiences as a complement to classroom activities.

MA-301    Foundations of Mathematics
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ Math A/Seq.II/Seq. III /Math B Regents or 480+ Math SAT
Designed to provide students with the mathematical literacy that is necessary to understand contemporary issues in today’s technological society. Students will obtain hands-on experience in solving realistic problems in discrete mathematics, exponential modeling, statistics and probability. Graphing calculators will be used throughout the course.

MA-321    Mathematics in Contemporary Society
3 class hours  1 laboratory hour  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ Math A/Seq. II/Seq. III /Math B Regents or 480+ Math SAT
Designed to provide students with mathematical ideas and methods found in the social sciences, the art, and in business. Topics will include fundamentals of statistics, scatterplots, graphics in the media, problem solving strategies, dimensional analysis, mathematics in music and art, and mathematical modeling. EXCEL will be used to explore real world applications.

MA-440    Pre-Calculus Mathematics
3 class hours  2 recitation hours  4 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 80+ Seq. III /Math B Regents
Mathematical foundations necessary for the study of the calculus. An introduction to analytic geometry, and the elementary functions of analysis, including algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions. The use of the graphing calculator will be included.

MU-205    Fundamentals of Music I
1 class hour  1 recitation hours  1 laboratory hour  2 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65+ ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70+ high school average.
Designed for beginners to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of music theory, notation and performance, with special focus on piano. Topics include scales, intervals, chords, left and right hand coordination, and the relationship of different time intervals.

SP-211    Speech Communication
4 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65 + ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70 + high school average. Oral Speech Test.
Study of oral communication and its role in contemporary society. Emphasis on listening, interpersonal communication, small group decision-making, and public speaking. Informative and persuasive speaking.

SP-321    Oral Performance for the Actor and Speaker
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65 + ELA Regents, if ELA not taken, minimum 70 + high school average.
Designed to improve the interpretation skills of actors, speakers, and those individuals desiring to improve the level of their individual oral expression for personal of professional reasons. Techniques of reading aloud from plays, poetry, prose, and essay. Practice in conveying information, projecting ideas, creating emotions, and interpreting from the script and oral interpretation as a means of developing literary criticism and discrimination.

Introductory analysis and description of structure and dynamics of human society; special emphasis on application of scientific methods of observation and analysis of social groups, inter-group relations, social change, social stratification, and social institutions.

SS-510    Psychology
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: Minimum score 75+ELA Regents or 480+ Verbal SAT. If neither taken,
minimum 85+ in English 5 if not taken, in English 4
Introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Topics include research methods, biological bases of brain and mind, sensation-perception, sleep and states of consciousness, learning-memory, development, cognition-intelligence, motivation-emotion, personality, abnormal psychology-therapy, and social psychology. Research findings and principles related to everyday life.

TH-120    Acting I
3 class hours  3 credits
Prerequisite: High School Recommendation/minimum score 65+ ELA Regents. If ELA not taken, minimum 70+ high school average
4 class hours  3 credits
Theory and practice of the art of acting; exercises in sense impression; characterization; improvisations; scenes from plays; special reports. Designed for the development of a knowledgeable and appreciative audience as well as for basic acting techniques.
